Is the Shunning Policy practiced by Jehovah’s Witnesses their version of the Hellfire Doctrine?

…absolute obedience, or your mate, husband or wife, will probably divorce you with the approval of the Organization. This shunning policy is seen universally as cruel and unusual punishment, a violation of basic human rights. There have been many who have committed suicide, rather than endure the pain of shunning. They have viewed the shunning policy as a fate worse than death. A Witness can’t imitate Jesus in this regard. He has to wait for the approval of the elders, and they usually delay their forgiveness a minimum of one year after the sinner has repented and left his sin….

…the shunning, resulting in a polarization of views. Those subject to the practice respond differently, usually depending both on the circumstances of the event, and the nature of the practices being applied. Extreme forms of shunning have damaged some individuals’ psychological and relational health. A key detrimental effect of some of the practices associated with shunning relate to their effect on relationships, especially family relationships. At its extremes, the practices may destroy marriages, break up families, and separate children and their parents. The effect of shunning can be very dramatic or even devastating on the shunned, as it can damage…

The Judicial System of Jehovah’s Witnesses: From God or Satan?

…that kills YOU will imagine he has rendered a sacred service to God. But they will do these things because they have not come to know either the Father or me. Nevertheless, I have spoken these things to YOU that, when the hour for them arrives, YOU may remember I told them to YOU.” The Bible does support expelling unrepentant sinners from the congregation. However, does it support shunning them? And what about someone who isn’t a sinner, but simply chooses to leave the congregation? Does is support shunning them? And what about someone who happens to disagree with the…

See the Difference in People

…because he or she stopped attending meetings be considered a loving act? Does the teenager become worse than one’s enemies, worthy of less love? Can shunning a victim of child sexual abuse be considered loving and Christ-like because they can no longer bear to see their abuser face-to-face at every meeting? Can shunning of a recently bereaved mother by her own son and daughter-in-law simply because she no longer attends meetings be Christian? Since when did non-attendance at meetings make a person worse than an enemy? What is especially sad about these practices within the Organization of Jehovah’s Witnesses is…

Parents, Are You Helping Your Child Progress to Baptism?

…Matt 23:15 Byington 15Woe to you, hypocrite scribes and Pharisees, because you go the rounds of the sea and the land to make one proselyte, and when you get him you make him more of a candidate for hell twice over than you are yourselves. Jesus is saying it’s not ok to Make disciples by hook or by crook. There’s the difference! Joseph Anton And yet tomorrow if every practicing Jehovah’s Witness stopped shunning family members and friends, (as the website claims is the standard) and started inviting them to join them at meals, the institution of shunning would vanish…

Geoffrey Jackson Speaks before the Royal Commission on Child Abuse

…desperately needed. This is the JW equivalent of Sophie’s Choice. Brother Jackson defends the disassociation policy as scriptural. That is a lie which dishonors the God he claims to worship. The word does not appear in the Bible nor is the policy anywhere to be found. Shunning for gross sin is one thing, but shunning because someone walks away is quite another. A person who officially resigns from the Organization is in fact, shunning it. We cannot have that. We cannot be shunned. We do the shunning. Nobody shuns us. We’ll show them! So, if a person dares to shun…

Let God’s Laws and Principles Train Your Conscience

…“We will never change our scriptural position on that subject” referring to the requirement for two witnesses. (See article Theocratic Warfare or Just Plain Lying?) “Jesus warned his followers: “The hour is coming when everyone who kills you will think he has offered a sacred service to God.” (John 16:2)”. (Par.3) “Shunning is what we do”, so said a Circuit Overseer to a body of elders recently.[i] Is shunning a loving provision of Jehovah or a threat from man-made organizations to make their followers adhere to the party line? Notice what this article states about the effects of shunning: “Targets…

The Watchtower Makes Its Submission to the Royal Commission

…allows us to hinder a police investigation by compromising evidence or testimony, so again, why would our sense of right and wrong not move us to cooperate? Point 4: Love should move us to do this. Love trumps rules every time. There is no Scriptural basis for the Organization’s practice of shunning (disfellowshipping = disassociation = shunning) a person as it would an apostate for merely resigning from the Organization. A person who resigns may continue to believe in Jesus and worship Jehovah, but merely wants no official membership in the Organization, so 2 John 10, 11 simply does not…

God's Channel of Communication

…slaves.” – (Matthew 24:48-49) Is shunning of your fellow slaves of Christ tantamount to ‘beating’? The book “It’s So much Work to Be Your Friend” on pages 358 and 359 state that a life without friendship is “devastating”, a “lonely and barren existence”. Shunning is deemed a worse punishment to a criminal than banishing. The book concludes: “The elders felt that shunning was among the most severe and devastating reprisals that a community could exact. Archives from these cultures [Ancient Romans, Lakota Sioux, Australian Aborigines, Pennsylvania Amish] indicate that many people who were shunned developed severe mental health problems and…

…much her daughter had hurt her. In imitation of Christ, true Christian parents would put the child’s welfare first. Unfortunately, the video and outline says we are doing just that by punishing the child. Altering the Shunning Policy This excerpt is from the public policy on JW.org regarding shunning those who are inactive. “Those who were baptized as Jehovah’s Witnesses but no longer preach to others, perhaps even drifting away from association with fellow believers, are not shunned.” Geoffrey Jackson also confirmed that members could fade away without being shunned. Such PR statements are intentionally misleading. The outline states: “Loyal…

…rest to keep them in line. Any who fail to shun the dissenter are threatened with shunning themselves. Of course, Terrence O’Brien and Rodney Spinks could hardly say such a thing in a public forum like that of the Royal Commission, so instead they try to shift the blame. How pathetic! “We don’t shun them”, they say. “They shun us.” ‘We’re the victims.’ This is, of course, a bald-faced lie. If the individual were really shunning all members of the congregation, would that require the individual publishers to shun them in return, effectively returning evil for evil? (Romans 12:17) This…

Physically In, Mentally Out or Physically In, Scripturally Awake

Opinion by Beroeans Creed We all know by now the acronym PIMO[i] for those of us who are awake to the Organization’s malfeasance and eisegetical method of scripture interpretation, yet remain in the congregation for generally one reason—the fear of loss. We cannot underestimate this fear of losing all contact with family and friends, due to the Organization’s extreme shunning policies, and suggest that this fear is not well founded and imbedded in the mind of every baptized Jehovah’s Witnesses. That is exactly what the organization has counted on for control over the decades. We can be confidant that those…

…publicity because of the policy of shunning of any members who may leave the organization for whatever reason. 8 12 Misleading speculation Referring to Daniel when he “He was likely in his late 90’s …” (Daniel 10:11) Put simply how many people in their late 90’s or early 100’s have the following said about them as Daniel 6:3, 28 says. This problem is a result of the errors and claims made in (1) and (2) above. Using 587 BCE for Jerusalem’s fall leads to a much more reasonable late 70’s. 9 13 Speculation “Perhaps Jehovah maneuvered matters this way so…

Love and Justice in the Christian Congregation (Part 2 of 4)

…in other articles which subtly encourage the shunning of those considered “spiritually weak” because of missing meetings or field service? This attitude which is becoming prevalent in a way which it never was 10 plus years ago, is not only unchristian—being contrary to Ephesians 5 cited in the paragraph, among other scriptures—but also is highly counter-productive. If someone has been stumbled, for example, this shunning policy would finish them off, creating a major blockade to their ever returning to the congregation. Please see the Lego animation video by Kevin McFree, “The six degrees of shunning” for a good and accurate…

Discipline – Evidence of God’s Love

…were greedy, idolaters, revilers, drunkards or extortioners, not even eating with them. The Greek word, sunanamignumi, translated “keeping company” means ‘to mix up together closely (to influence), or to associate intimately with’. Note the indications of ‘closely’ and ‘intimately’. If we have a close friend we would spend a lot of time in close companionship, perhaps intimate time. This type of relationship is quite different from someone who is an acquaintance. However, not sharing intimate company with someone is a lot different from shunning someone, refusing to speak to them at all, even answering an urgent telephone call from them….

“Keep Displaying Love—It Builds Up”

…If a person has a reason for living in these circumstances then suicide can usually be averted. If any organisation takes away all the loved ones of an individual by forbidding them to speak to the individual, or slanders that individual’s conscience-led actions so that members cease showing love to that person, then in the event of a suicide they would be a big contributory factor to that sad event, even culpable for it. That is what has happened in recent years because of an ever more stringent shunning policy which is enforced these days even without a formal disfellowshipping…

Theocratic Warfare or Just Plain Lying?

Theocratic Warfare or Just Plain Lying?

…These included a Muslim and Sikh group, the Seventh Day Adventist Church, an Evangelical association, and the Mormon Church. (Strange bedfellows from a Witness point of view.) It seems none of them want the government meddling in their internal affairs. Be that as it may, at the 1:14 minute mark of the video, David Gnam, a witness lawyer serving at the Canada branch, defines disfellowshipping for the Supreme Court Justices this way: “That word [disfellowship] is used by Jehovah’s Witnesses. Jehovah’s Witnesses don’t use the word “shun” or “shunning”. They refer to it as “disfellowship”, “disfellowshipping”, “disfellowshipped”, because that really…

A Jehovah’s Witnesses Elder Is Tried for Apostasy

…thousands of our brothers and sisters hostage to their unscriptural shunning policy. If calling someone by the wrong pronoun is considered an arrestable offense, how much more so should the extreme discrimination imposed by the shunning policy constitute a criminal offense? That is the question that needs to be addressed, in my humble opinion. Meleti Vivlon “But you made it clear that you were a Witness by showing up for the committee meeting and saying that you were not disassociating yourself.“ I disagree. According to their own website a person can leave without writing an official letter. I chose that…

“My Kingdom is No Part of This World”

…we depict would be listened to and embraced with open arms if he criticized the policy of shunning child abuse victims just because they no longer want to be one of Jehovah’s Witnesses? Any honest JW knows that if you speak against any teaching of the Governing Body—especially if you are using the Bible to prove your point—you will be brought before a judicial committee who will decline to consider the Scriptural evidence with you, but who will only be interested in knowing if you will change your mind and conform. Any honest JW can also attest to the fact…

Do You Have The Facts?

…especially important to avoid websites promoted by apostates. Their whole purpose is to tear down God’s people and to distort the truth. Poor quality information will lead to poor decisions.”(Par.4) Apostates, Apostasy and Shunning – The facts. What is an apostate? Merriam-Webster.com dictionary defines apostasy as “an act of refusing to continue to follow, obey or recognize a religious faith”. But, how does the Bible define it? The word ‘apostasy’ only appears twice in the whole of the Christian Greek Scriptures, in 2 Thessalonians 2:3 and Acts 21:21 (in the NWT Reference Edition) and the word ‘apostate’ does not appear…

Be Modest in Walking with God

…The words “disfellowshipping” and “disassociation” do not appear in the Bible. For that matter, neither do related words used by other Christian denominations such as “excommunication”, “shunning”, “ostracising” and “expelling”. Nevertheless, there is direction in the Christian Scriptures intended to protect the congregation and the individual Christian from a corrupting influence. As it pertains to this subject, if we are “to be modest in walking with our God”, we have to know where the limits are. These are not only limits which Jehovah—or more precisely for the Christian—which Jesus has placed via his legal instructions, but also limits imposed by…

Deadly Theology by Barbara J Anderson (2011)

…it in the same category as blood transfusions as far as Jehovah’s prohibition of taking blood into the system is concerned. In 1958, blood serums such as diphtheria antitoxin and gamma globulin were allowed as a matter of personal judgment. But that view would change many more times. But the blood prohibition was without penalty until 1961 when disfellowshipping and shunning was put into place for transgressors. Nothing could be clearer than in 1961 when it was plainly specified that the blood-ban applied to both whole blood and components of blood such as blood fractions and hemoglobin. If you have…

What is your Thorn in the Flesh?

…our own lives when something afflicts us repeatedly like a thorn in our flesh. For example, do you suffer from some chronic temptation, like an alcoholic who hasn’t had a drink in years, but every day must fight the desire to give in and have “just one drink”. There is an addictive nature to sin. The Bible says that it “entices us”. Or is it depression, or other mental or physical health issue? What about suffering under persecution, like slanderous gossip, insults and hate speech. Many who leave the religion of Jehovah’s Witnesses feel beaten down by the shunning they…

The Truth Brings, “Not Peace But a Sword”

…cruel opposition, hatred in the form of verbal abuse and slanderous gossip, and shunning everywhere we turn. Some listen, but most reject us and will not give us a hearing ear. Even if we say that we’ll use only the Bible and discuss only Bible truth, they will turn away. However, there is a bright side; one I can personally attest to. The “Read” scripture in paragraph 5 promises that while we will lose family and friends because we choose to follow the Christ, we will find a hundred-fold more—mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, and on top of that, everlasting life….

Awakening, Part 2: What’s It All About?

…resigned from the Christian congregation—and the elders told us: ‘Don’t even speak to them!’ This isn’t Christian. This isn’t the love of the Christ at all. The Bible does allow for shunning, but only for those who are anti-Christs, who turn against the Christ himself, and who try to teach falsehoods, not some poor victim of child abuse; and yet we obeyed men rather than God, and became enslaved to men. Now we’re free. But what do we do with that freedom? In the Civil War in the United States, after the war, the slaves were free; but many didn’t…

Have Jehovah’s Witnesses Reached the Tipping Point?

Have Jehovah’s Witnesses Reached the Tipping Point?

…in waking up. I think that just maybe—just maybe—we are at that tipping point. Perhaps in the very near future we are going to see a flood of witnesses exiting the organization. Many who are physically in but mentally out will be freed from the fear of shunning when this exodus reaches a kind of saturation point. Am I rejoicing over this? No. Not at all. Rather, I am in fearful expectation of the damage it will do. Already, I see that the majority of those leaving the organization are also leaving God, becoming agnostic or even atheist. No Christian…

ARC Duplicity

…there are many others) for R&F JW’s to question the claim that this is Jehovah’s only earthly org. lazarus They reminded me of two boxers on the defensive just ducking, dodging the blows and throwing the odd jab. This document that the presented to the ARC was referred to as a ‘living document’ based on a UK Policy of JW’s. Again many questions were asked by the ARC, regarding making this document available to all members , further changes to be made or adjusted as a result of Fridays meeting, the 2 witness rule, Shunning and a inclusion in the…

Preaching Hate

…loathe us, view us with disgust. Torture Jehovah’s Witnesses engage in organizational torture by their unloving practices of shunning, breaking up families and causing severe suffering and damage to the victims. This policy of hate needs to end. Those who dare to speak against the leadership face torture. Those who dare to leave face torture. Those who have left will continue to be tortured until they break down and return. [Torture is] the deliberate, systematic, or wanton infliction of physical or mental suffering by one or more persons acting alone or on the orders of any authority, to force another…

WT Study: Imitate the One Who Promises Everlasting Life

…by coming to meetings and enduring the ongoing rebuke of the congregation through shunning, they are demonstrating repentance. (This is akin to the Catholic mentality of penance.) Three months go by. Then six. Finally after a year, she is reinstated. What should we do in the meantime? Should we obey men and do nothing to help this sister, ignoring and totally shunning her? Is that the course of love? Is it the course of obedience? Obedience to men, yes. But are we interested in obeying men, or God? In a circumstance like this, Paul counselled the Corinthian congregation on how…

Let your Joy be made full

…life in general. Unemployment or job security worries can affect us as we care about our responsibilities to our loved one(s). Problems can arise in our personal relationships, both within the family and in the wider circle of our friends and acquaintances. Another factor affecting our joy could be that family members or our former friends or acquaintances are shunning us. This could be because of being misguided by others as to how to act in relationship with fellow Christians who may no longer continue to accept certain beliefs that we may previously have shared in common with them because…

Jehovah Values His Humble Servants

Jehovah Values His Humble Servants

…of the views of the Governing Body. We can reflect on the following questions when deciding on whether the Organization shows humility: When was the last time the Governing Body took any suggestions from any Witnesses or others? Have they changed any policies to better protect Witness children from abuse?[iii] Have they changed their unscriptural policy on disfellowshipping despite being against shunning[iv] as practiced by other churches before the 1950’s? What Situations can Test our Humility? According to the Watchtower article, there are three situations (that are notably repeated in the publications of the Organization) that especially require humility. These…

Examining Matthew 24, Part 7: The Great Tribulation

…foul and claim they are being persecuted, often by the very persons they are themselves shunning and persecuting. This is called “projection”. Projecting one’s sin onto one’s victims. This shunning is just one tiny part of the tribulation that Christians have endured at the hands of organized religion down through the ages. Now, here’s the problem: If we try to limit the application of the great tribulation to a tiny segment of time such as that represented by events pertaining to the end of the world, then what of all the Christians who died since the time of Christ? Are…

Listen, Learn, and Show Compassion

…must listen attentively if he is to learn , … Otherwise, the doctor could misdiagnose the problem ”. Clearly shunning is not the right way to go about things. Shunning does not allow one to listen attentively. We would be unable to diagnose the problem, or if indeed there is a problem in the first place. We are reminded “we cannot read hearts ”. So why might our brother and / or sister not be acting as they did before? The only way to know if they have a problem or perhaps if instead, we have a problem, is to…

A Fondness for Pre-Eminence

…or open criticism of the disfellowshipping decision. To be clear, we accept there is a place for personal shunning in the Scriptures with those who are persistent wrongdoers. There is a place for personal shunning of those who reject Christ or display by their actions and moral conduct that they are unworthy of our association. There is every reason to be cautious in our association. But what we are dealing with here, is involuntary disassociation or throwing out of the assembly on the basis of rejecting human authority above that of the Christ. That this practice is wrong, is something…

“I will walk in your Truth”

…vow of dedication; the Other Sheep as friends of God without a mediator; the systematic rejection of the emblems; the shunning of child abuse victims who choose to leave. (This list could go on for a couple of pages easily.) We’ve shown scripturally how these and other JW doctrines are false in the pages of this and the archive site. Given this, how can one remain in all the truth and yet actively practice and promote JW theology? What the Article is Really About From the title, one might assume the article is about walking in God’s truth as explained…

“Who is on Jehovah’s Side?”

…the unscriptural, inhuman and unGodly practice of shunning. Compliance with Caesar’s laws by reporting allegations of child sexual abuse when required. Also positively encouraging the accuser to do so. It is a criminal offence, not a sin and should be handled as such. An apology to all those abused because of following misguided interpretation of scripture. Return the ownership of all the Kingdom Halls to the local trustees of local congregations from whom they were taken. Scrap the secret 3-man judicial committee. They should return to the original Biblical arrangement where such matters were dealt with in front of the…

Know Your Enemy

…For example, he uses bait to lure them into doing things his way. Also, he attempts to bully them into submission.” Do you know an organization that lures people into it: by reassuring the public that shunning is not practiced, by claiming to keep to high moral standards, by emphasising that Armageddon is imminent and that members will live in a paradise earth, if they preach this message to others? Do you know an organization which tries to keep its members by bullying tactics, such as: by pushing child baptism, shunning and loss of contact with family members if one…

Keep Contending for Jehovah’s Blessing

…is telling you to do, otherwise, you will become disapproved. Hold that thought. One of our dear, anointed brothers wrote to me today, because he is nearing death and wishes to see his children before he dies. However, they have been shunning him for years. In the latest twist, the daughter has learned that he has been partaking and inexplicably has added this to the list of his “sins”. She now demands that he stop partaking as a condition of her acquiescence to meet with him one last time before he dies. Granted, she is going beyond even what the…

A Letter to a Fleshly Brother

…in a way that he finds objectionable or be made to choose between his beliefs and his family.” Does that statement apply only to those changing religions to become a JW, or does it also apply to morally upright JWs who voluntarily leave the religion for conscientious reasons, such as unscriptural Watchtower teachings and practices? The practice of ostracizing and shunning such persons is one of the reasons Russia has deemed JW.ORG to be an extremist religion. In his book, Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief, Lawrence Wright wrote: “People have the right to believe whatever they…

Awakening: Part 5, What’s the Real Problem with JW.org

…in large part for speaking about Jesus too much. The elders accused him of sounding like an evangelist (the word means, ‘proclaimer of the good news’) and of promoting a sect. How is it possible for the Christian congregation to disfellowship a man for preaching about the Christ? How can you take Christ out of Christian? Indeed, how is it possible for a person to hold in his mind the belief that he is a Christian and a follower of Jesus Christ while at the same time shunning someone for speaking about Jesus Christ more than he does about Jehovah…

A Weapon of Darkness

…process. I ask myself, does the baby (our core teachings) outweigh the dirty bath water? (erroneous teachings). I believe our core teachings are truth, and the majority of our peripheral teachings don’t really harm anyone. The teachings that I am most disturbed by are our blood policy, family shunning, and two witness rule for reporting a crime. These are nearly deal breakers for me. I remind myself that those responsible for such policy will answer to Jehovah, and that Jehovah is fully capable of making things right. In no way do I minimize the pain and suffering and loss, but…

Anthony Morris III: Jehovah Blesses Obedience

Anthony Morris III: Jehovah Blesses Obedience

…this video, why not put it to the test. Go to your next meeting and tell the elders that you don’t believe in 1914, or that you don’t want to report your time anymore. A person who is not dogmatic will allow you to have your own opinions. A person who is not dogmatic will not punish you for having your own opinions or for doing things your own way. A person who is not dogmatic will not threaten you with a life-altering punishment like shunning if you choose to disagree with him. Go ahead. Try it. Make my day….

Accept Jehovah’s Help to Resist Wicked Spirits

…of Olives, the disciples approached him privately, saying: “Tell us, When will these things be, and what will be the sign of your presence and of the conclusion of the system of things?” 4 And in answer Jesus said to them: “Look out that nobody misleads YOU; 5 for many will come on the basis of my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ [or literally ‘I am the anointed one’] and will mislead many”. For examples of what the Bible really teaches, please look at articles on this site about Resurrection, Mankind’s hope for the future, shunning and the judicial…

Keep Worshipping Jehovah When Under Ban

…and instead of having the best child protection policies, have some of the worst child protection policies of any secular or religious Organization. Is the Organization persecuted for its unchristian judicial system, especially the inhuman shunning policy? Yes. Once again, they display an intransigent stance, which breaks up families and drives people to suicide, all because the Organization is trying to control its members from leaving in larger numbers. The doubling of Witnesses during World War II as highlighted in paragraph 5 could undoubtedly just as easily be caused by the then prevailing terrible world conditions in conjunction with the…

“Joel Dellinger: Cooperation Builds Unity (Luke 2:41)”

…Milgram experiment (psychological experiment on obedience), the question being “how much pain are we willing to inflict on others” by hard style shunning, denying freedom of speech and covering up crimes (e.g. child abuse and domestic violence). In the aforementioned study, the vast majority of people was willing to inflict tremendous pain to others, when supervised and ordered to do so by what they perceived to be an Authority (doctor in white lab coat). We all need to ask ourselves: where do I draw the line, if I am personally responsible to Christ? eve04 I didn’t watch the video. So…

We belong to Jehovah

…and forgiving one another freely”. Jehovah will not forsake his people (Par.18-19) Paragraph 18 states “Even while living “in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation,” we want people to see that we are “blameless and innocent…shining as illuminators in the world. (Philippians 2:15)”. What is missed out is also important, namely “children of God, without a blemish …” Surely having a shunning policy that goes against the UN Human Rights charter, and the continued refusal to make important changes to the handling of child abuse cases, such as complying with Caesar’s law to report such allegations, does not…

What Our Attendance at Meetings says about us

…the weekend, we are still expected to effectively flagellate ourselves and go to the meetings. Then to cap it all, according to the paragraph, Jehovah allegedly notices with appreciation this self-flagellation to meetings he did not prescribe, “in fact, the greater our struggle, the more Jehovah appreciates” it! (Par.13) “However, we are particularly interested in helping those who are “related to us in the faith” but who have become inactive. (Gal. 6:10) We prove our love for them by encouraging them to attend our meetings, especially the Memorial.” (Par.15). What hypocrisy! The Organization encourages partial shunning of those who are…

Prepare Now for Persecution

…to be an errant conclusion. There are also reasons why authorities and others would take it upon themselves to oppose the Organization. One is the stubborn refusal to come clean about the systemic failure to get to grips with child abusers within their ranks and to make changes to minimize the chances of its occurrence at least on repeated offences. Another is the shunning policy of weak, lapsed and disfellowshipped Witnesses which is against Christian principles and basic human rights. Having raised the specter of persecution without scriptural basis and introduced “fear” into the readers mind, the next paragraph then…

Is the Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses a False Prophet?

Is the Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses a False Prophet?

…“Do you believe the Governing Body is God’s channel to communicate truth to his organization today?” This is seen as a litmus test, a kind of oath of fealty. If you say, ‘Yes’, you are denying your Lord Jesus. Any answer other than an unequivocal ‘Yes’ will lead to persecution in the form of shunning. You will be cut off from pretty much everyone you have ever known and cared about. Worse, they’ll all think of you as an apostate, and there is no worse designation in their eyes; because an apostate is condemned to eternal death. Your mother will…

Happy Are Those Who Serve “the Happy God”

…the Corinthians? Does JW teaching recommend us to “every human conscience in the sight of God”? The other cited scripture is 1 Timothy 1:5 which says, “Really the objective of this mandate is love out of a clean heart and out of a good conscience and out of faith without hypocrisy.” Have the many teachings and practices unique to Jehovah’s Witnesses—overuse of extreme shunning, prohibition against the medical use of blood, failing to report child sexual abuse, a 10-year affiliation with the U.N.—demonstrated ‘love out of a clean heart, a good conscience and a lack of hypocrisy’? Happy despite difficulties…

My Judicial Committee Hearing – Part 1

…conclude that the motivation of the branch office Service Desk lies elsewhere. You have no authority over me, because I do not grant you that authority, but you do exercise authority over the diminishing number of Witnesses who remain faithful to the leaders of the Organization, both local and at headquarters. Like the Sanhedrin who persecuted all who followed Jesus, you fear me and those like me, because we speak truth, and you have no defense against truth other than the rod of punishment in the form of shunning. (John 9:22; 16:1-3; Acts 5:27-33) This is the reason that you…

Who Molds Your Thinking?

…To suggest otherwise would open the door to litigation. The reality is otherwise, however. The Governing Body definitely has all Witnesses under their strong influence. Evidence of this is their published shunning policy and its implementation at the hands of vigilant congregation elders. Likewise, they influence Witnesses to contribute time and money through Watchtower articles, other publications and web broadcasts. They might argue that they do not exercise influence or control and that it is up to each Witness to decide whether they will comply. However, the reality is that when Witnesses believe that to disobey the Governing Body is…

Find your footing in this freedom. Do not let religion trip you up again and harness you to a system of rules and obligations.” (Gal 5:1 Mirror Bible; Col 2:20-23) Disfellowshipping: Leading to absolute shunning based on a misinterpretation and thus misapplication of a few scriptures. “Return to Jehovah”…

Abide, Sweet Spirit

…holy spirit. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Even the tax collectors do the same, don’t they? – Matthew 5:46 If congregations of Jehovah’s Witnesses were filled by the true love the spirit cultivates, we would not stand for an unloving and unscriptural shunning arrangement. We would not have congregations filled with gossip. We would not tolerate false teachings of shameless self promotion by the governing body. True love cultivated by holy spirit, my brethren, is of a different and superior quality: Love is patient, love is kind, it is not envious. Love…

Labeling the Apostate

…to disfellowship the individual in question. Perhaps you know the man. Perhaps you consider him a man of integrity and his disfellowshipping puzzles and distresses you. However, you are not allowed to speak with him; to question him; to hear his side of the story. You must accept the label which has been affixed. To support this unscriptural procedure and the equally unscriptural requirement to share in shunning the former brother, we often quote 2 John 9-11. Is it not obvious that circuit overseers are told to focus on how much field service a person does rather than on his true Christian qualities when making appointments? Paragraph 11 admonishes us: “Never would we want to be like the Pharisees, who resented those who questioned them and persecuted those who expressed an opinion contrary to their own”. But is it not clear that shunning and disfellowshipping those who have doubts or scripturally question a current teaching…

…condemned the use of life-saving medicines and discouraged their followers with threats of shunning for engaging the services of a medical professional. They believe they are doing God’s will, but their commands are based on faulty interpretations of Scripture. Are we guilty of the same? Are we guilty of the shedding of innocent blood by enforcing a command of men as if it were a doctrine of divine origin. (Mk 7:7 NWT) An Obvious Flaw in Reasoning An example of our flawed reasoning on blood can be found in paragraph 14. It states: “Do you grasp the reason why God…

…authority? Shunning Materialism Another evidence of Jesus’ humility is mentioned in par. 7: “Jesus chose to live in humble circumstances unencumbered by many material things. (Matt. 8:20)” This is an excellent message for us to apply to our own lives, adjusting our mental attitude to be content with what we have so as to better serve the Lord without distractions. (1Ti 6:8) However, what of the messenger? Is he “unencumbered by many material things”? There was a time when I took great pride in explaining to the Catholics I preached to in South America with their block-spanning, town-dwarfing churches that…

The parts of the brain that fire when we experience pain and disgust are the same parts that fire when we hear lies. Hypocrisy is a particularly disgusting form of lying, because the individual—be he Satan or a human—is trying to get you to accept and trust him as something he is not. He does that usually to take advantage of your trust…

The Problem with Research — Part 1

…and Jesus are responsible for the wrong teachings. Is this even possible? (James 1:17) Isn’t it amazing how many within our ranks do not take the time to think this through? A case in point is the Governing Body’s recent self-appointment as the FDS in October 2012. This teaching is now foremost among Jehovah’s Witnesses, as it authorizes seven individuals to interpret scripture and direct the organization. Any member who would dare openly question the scriptural validity of this teaching will face shunning. Of course, the GB insists that Jehovah’s holy spirit directed them to this new understanding. But for…

Overturn Every Reasoning That is Against the Knowledge of God!

…is definitely having no natural affection. Shunning one’s family is hating the person because of the action, not hating the action, but loving the person. Parents do not succeed in getting a child to obey them with love by such treatment. The child needs to be spoken to and reasoned with. Is it not necessary to treat adults in the same way? This topic has been covered many times in reviews. Here are a few worth reviewing for a fuller discussion of this topic. Conclusion: The Organization has its viewpoint badly wrong on this subject. They appear to be using…

Keep Walking in the Truth

…doctrines of the self-appointed FDS/GB and these have either remained silent due to threats of shunning, faded away, or in many cases are removed from the congregation and labeled with the pejorative “mentally diseased Apostate,” or antichrist. The Christ-centered discussions on this and other forums proves to the contrary, that we are far from antichrist! So, how should we apply John’s warnings in today’s Christian Congregation? Here is a clue, interestingly it is found in the same linked article “ The Antichrist Exposed ” . Let us focus on two identifiers. (See December 1st, 2006 Watchtower) “Antichrist” means “against (or…

…responsible for the reproach. It is also therefore their responsibility to clear any reproach that exists. Ignoring solutions: There are three simple solutions, but none seem palatable to the Organization. Either no longer bear the name Jehovah’s Witnesses, claiming to be his chosen people, thereby distancing themselves somewhat from God’s reputation, moving to the same distance as other religions, Or change the policies that cause people to be stumbled or blame Jehovah God for allowing such things. For example, the shunning policy, or the hiding of domestic and child abuse within the Organization. Ironically this is done on the basis…

…which it was not designed, then why was it not enforced to exonerate Pablo? If the Organization really cares about the welfare of lost sheep then it should stop disfellowshipping and supporting the shunning of those child sexual abuse victims who have left the Organization because they cannot cope with being in close proximity to their abuser who has escaped any similar censure. Let them not stick to the two-witness principle in positions where it results in injustice to the victims, straining out the gnat, and then going on to gulp down the camel by ignoring the spirit of reporting…

Examining the Trinity: Part 1, What does history teach us?

…belief system that describes itself as “the Truth”. A Jehovah’s Witness will routinely ask another JW whom they’ve only just met, “How long have you been in the Truth?”, or, “When did you learn the truth?” What they really mean to ask is how long that person has been a member of the organization of Jehovah’s Witnesses. They confuse loyalty to the organization with a love of truth. But put their love of truth to the test and, in my fairly extensive experience, the truth loses. Speak the truth to them and you get slander, insults and shunning in return….

Media, Money, Meetings, and Me

https://youtu.be/rh0rmzixuhs Hello everyone and thanks for joining me. Today I wanted to talk on four topics: media, money, meetings and me. Beginning with media, I’m specifically referring to the publication of a new book called Fear to Freedom which was put together by a friend of mine, Jack Grey, who once served as a Jehovah’s Witnesses elder. His main goal is to help those who are going through the trauma of leaving a high control group such as Jehovah’s Witnesses and facing the inevitable shunning from both family and friends that results from such a cruel and difficult exodus. Now…

Kicking against the Goads

…thinking outside of his environment by training that made him feel special and that caused him to look down on others as beneath contempt (John 7:47-49). In the same way, Witnesses are trained to view everything and everyone outside the congregation as worldly and to be avoided. Finally, for Saul, there was the ever-present fear of being cut off from everything he valued were he to confess the Christ (John 9:22). Likewise, Witnesses live under the threat of shunning should they openly question the teachings of the Governing Body, even when such teachings go contrary to the commands of Christ….

…self-control when under physical or verbal attacks. As the article states “We too can pray when under attack. In response, Jehovah provides his holy spirit, which can help us to endure” (Par.16). It then goes on to ask “Can you think of a situation in which you need to exercise self-restraint or freely forgive unwarranted animosity?” Discussing this point in a more serious manner, we do need to exercise self restraint and / or freely forgive unwarranted animosity, or even unscriptural shunning. However, it would be in a balanced manner. There is no scriptural requirement to keep restrained from speaking…

They can somehow cheat on their husbandly owner and yet remain “chaste virgins to the Christ.” (2Co 11:3) You may find that for decades they have systematically failed to report the crime of child sexual abuse to the superior authorities as directed by God’s Word. (Romans 13:1-7) They have also added to the burden of the “little ones” by shunning any who do not submit to their leadership and their judicial process. (Luke 17:2) Yet, this is nothing to be concerned about. They…

The context of Paul’s words indicate that our actions might lead someone into false worship or into compromising one’s conscience. Unless the culture in which we live associates a beard or makeup with some false religious activity, it is difficult to see how Paul’s words about stumbling apply. Point (3) concerns failing to point out a trip-hazard. Abstain from every form of wickedness.” (1Th 5:21, 22) How are we to “make sure of all things”, if we can’t even question the choice of a paint brush? When the elders tell us to shun someone with whom they have met secretly, how are we to know that they are not acting wickedly by shunning the innocent one? There are documented cases of victims of child sexual abuse who have been shunned…

Jesus, The Way (jy Chapter 17) –He teaches Nicodemus at Night “ Jesus tells Nicodemus that in order to enter the Kingdom of God, a person must be “born again.”— John 3:2, 3 .” Today some Christians talk of themselves as ‘born again Christians’, but what does it mean to be born again? It is interesting to examine the Greek phrase translated “born again”. The Kingdom Interlinear like other interlinear says “should be generated – from above”. That ties in with verse 5 where Jesus goes on to say “unless anyone…

…Daniel. The same with any congregation members who realise the teaching of 1914 or that the interpretation of who is the faithful and discreet slave is wrong, or who disagree with the unscriptural JW implementation of shunning, or recognize that their application of the two-witness rule is incorrect. They are not allowed to voice it nor follow their conscience without hindrance. Rather, the organization acts like Daniel’s opposers in persecuting such ones who follow their scriptural obligations and their Bible trained conscience by sticking to God’s word rather than the interpretations of men. “The key to strong faith is not…

What is vital is that we in our hearts continue to hate what is bad, hate injustice, and do not allow ourselves to compromise so that we teach falsehoods, or support the administering of injustice, whether by unlawful shunning, or by other means. Amos 5:14, 15 – We must accept Jehovah’s standards of good and bad and learn to love them (jd90-91 par. 16-17) This reference asks the valid question, “Are we willing to accept Jehovah’s standards of good and bad?” It continues correctly with “Those high standards are revealed to us in…

…communist lands, and vice-versa. Is Jehovah’s hand short, or does he simply not require such things at all? When we read paragraph 8, we can only ask how do the witnesses in Russia feel about being under ban yet again in the year of 2017? We would want to have empathy for the witnesses as individuals, but once again it appears that to some extent it has been either unnecessarily provoked or at least incurred, in part due to the unscriptural rules they enforce, such as the policy of complete shunning of disassociated and disfellowshipped ones until reinstatement takes place….

…likely the work of Raymond Franz.) I use only one example, but I know that many of you have tried other methods, such as reasoning with your friends or relatives using the Bible to show that so many of our key teachings are unscriptural. Nevertheless, we get continual reports that show the common response to be stubborn resistance. Often, when someone who is cemented to his or her belief realizes there is no Scriptural answer to the truths you are revealing, they turn to shunning as a way to avoid thinking about things they are simply not willing to accept….

Who Is Leading Jehovah’s People Today?

…protection of the little ones both inside and outside of the congregation. We’ve learned that this de facto policy is part of an oral law coming from the Governing Body which it continues to defend.[iv] Jesus, at Hebrews 17:8 says, hasn’t changed. He would never approve of shunning the most vulnerable among us, as the organization has done, just because they have chosen to reject, not the brothers, but the authority figures that have added to their emotional abuse by implementing harsh and uncaring policies. The Governing Body presumes to take the lead. They presume to do so in the…

They Broke Free From False Religion

…are not a Jehovah’s Witness, you might assume so, given the religious climate of freedom within Christendom. However, you’d be sorely mistaken. Unlike other Christian religions, JWs harken back to the mentality prevalent prior to the 18th century; the very attitude they’ve just condemned. While the laws of civilized countries do not permit burning at the stake or imprisonment as was the case in the past, they do support, for the time being at least, the punishment of shunning. Our sister would experience severe reprisals in the form of disfellowshipping—a practice worse than the current practice of Catholic excommunication. She…

…speaking of those who leave, but of a brother who was sinning in a way that even the pagan world of that time found shocking. Would some get the idea that those who have fallen away are now to be treated in the same way as disfellowshipped ones? This does seem to be a new direction that the Organization is moving based on this year’s regional convention. This direction was given in the part, “Shunning Unrepentant Sinners”. “Loyal Christians would not associate with “anyone called a brother” who is practicing serious sin This is true even if no congregation action…

…their suffering was compounded by the punishment of shunning. Being cut off from their emotional support structure of family and friends, their injurious burden became even harder to bear. (Mt 23:4;18:6) Many coming to these videos were expecting the best and have been baffled by this evident lack of love for the little one. Some even make excuses, trying to reason away the incongruity of a Christian doggedly defending the organization at the expense of its most vulnerable members. Why the Fruit Is Missing Yet, what cannot be reasonably denied is that evidence of the love Jesus spoke of at…

Smoldering Wick Hi Leonardo Josephus, You are so right about paragraph 12 and its reference to disfelloshipped loved ones, a teaching Jesus absolutely desecrated in his, ‘Prodigal Son’ parable.(Luke 15:11-32) In fact Jesus shunned no one. The only ones guilty of shunning were the “wise and intellectual ones” who were too proud to learn or ask Jesus honestly for clarification of such things.(Luke 10:21) The only shunning Jesus practiced was his attitude toward hypocrisy which resulted in making him the main target of hypocrites. The increasing reference to this practise only demonstrates the organization’s growing vulnerability…

When I heard this I felt an immediate rush of relief that I don’t need to hang on to such a conflicting state of mind, and it amazed me that the rest of the family could be so self righteous in thinking that their…

LonelySheep Such simple advice from Jesus that we have to complicate. Imagine if this advice were followed, probably a full 2/3 of judicial issues would never happen. If they have stopped sinning, they would have no reason for fear. Consequently all my study now is to see what the truth of the Bible…
