In the article, a resource is cited with what turns out to be a very judicious and self-serving application of ellipsis. The relevant quote from the Watchtower article is:
"Keep in mind that Satan does not want you to think clearly or reason things out well. Why? Because propaganda "is likely to be most effective," says one source, "if people...are discouraged from thinking critically." (Media and Society in the Twentieth Century.)
(ws17 07 p. 28)
Those with a background knowledge of JW thinking will quickly see why the ellipsis was needed to hide the inconvenient elements of this expert's findings:
"Therefore, it is likely to be most effective if people do not have access to multiple sources of information and if they are discouraged from thinking critically. Michael Balfour has suggested that the "best touchstone for distinguishing propaganda from science is whether a plurality of sources of information and of interpretations is being discouraged or fostered." (Media and Society in the Twentieth Century. - page 83)
If you are unfamiliar with the Organization's position on research, allow me to explain that Witnesses are actively discouraged from reviewing "multiple sources of information" and of considering "a plurality of...interpretations". Anything that disagrees with Watchtower doctrine is considered as apostate material and viewing it is equivalent to viewing pornography.[i]
Of course, use of ellipsis is valid at times. I just used them to avoid repeating the same phrase a second time. They can also be used to avoid including information irrelevant to the matter under discussion. However, using them to conceal information that it both relevant and damning to the case one is making is nothing short of intellectual dishonesty.
So the lesson we can take from this is to always check the full text of the sources referenced in the publications of JW.org to ensure one is not getting a distorted view of the truth. A good resource for doing this is google books. Make sure to frame the quote in quotation marks to restrict the search.

It's hard to believe you could be a part of something for so many years and come to find out how deceptive they have been. But gosh darnit the proof has been in the pudding. Thanks Meleti

The question is, how exactly does Satan carry this out? How does he manipulate the minds of some so that they mislead others and serve as his ministers?Reply by SeasonsOfGrace on 2017-08-29 09:25:52
Hi Meleti,
I think this would be a great discussion to have.. Everyone has their personal opinions but are there scriptures that can clearly point to:

Hi Lucas...
I've wondered this myself. Is there truly a 'dark force' leading and directing this organization? Or is it just plain ego and ignorance?
With all of the letters written into the society about false teachings, and the prevalence of 'ex-jw sites' on the internet revealing false teachings... is there any reason they can claim ignorance at this point?
If not, this leaves the 'ego'...
Perhaps they are so far in over their heads that any changes to their teachings would be detrimental to keeping the org above water, so they blatantly disregard the 'truth'?
Are humans their own worst enemies (when it comes to ego and ignorance) and Satan manipulates this?
I don't know. :(Reply by eve04 on 2017-08-29 16:20:56

I have wondered that for years, especially since Witnessess say it so much. Satan is to blame for practically everything. How does he do it? I have researched it and have not been able to come up with a satisfactory answer. Thanks Meleti for taking up the challenge. :)Reply by Robert-6512 on 2017-08-29 17:46:15
Before you try to determine how Satan does what he is blamed for, here is a simpler question: Is there any incontrovertible proof, whatsoever, that Satan ever actually did anything? Is there even ONE provable, documented event, at any point in human history, that Satan and the demons did any one particular thing?
As far as I can tell, the answer is No.
I also have found it extremely peculiar that "being possessed by demons" seems to start happening totally out of the blue, right around the time Jesus shows up, and with the exception of the account in Acts where the girl had a spirit of prediction, the whole topic of demon possession doesn't ever seem to get mentioned again. Why?
Could it be that demon possession was merely a distraction, so that people wouldn't listen to Jesus? And after Jesus died, that distraction wasn't needed any more since he was no longer on the scene?
I would be interested in hearing what others thought about this.Reply by Yehorakam on 2017-09-01 21:06:45
"Is there any incontrovertible proof, whatsoever, that Satan ever actually did anything? Is there even ONE provable, documented event, at any point in human history, that Satan and the demons did any one particular thing? As far as I can tell, the answer is No"
Have you forgotten about Eve...Job? How about when Satan entered Judas? How about Jesus words at Luke 22:31? How about Satan's opposition to the anointed ones at Zechariah 3? How about Heb 2:3? How about Paul's words at 1 Thess 2:18? How about who is responsible for teaching lies, blinding people, misleading the whole earth, warring against true Christians? (John 8:44;2 Cor 4:4;11:3,13-15; Rev 12:9,10,17). Is there a lack of evidence? The question really is: do you accept what the scriptures say about Satan and his helpers and what they are responsible for? ...because the scriptures are quite clear. Yes, we as sinful humans mess up things on our own because of bad decisions and commit acts of injustice. That we are to blame for and we should not point the finger. But Satan and the demons have been committing and instigating wicked acts 24/7 for 1000's of years and deserve eternal destruction. They are the angels we will judge (1 Cor 6:3). It will be great to get that filth eliminated for good.
Robert, it is a dangerous path to tread if you think they're not responsible for the majority of wickedness or that there is a lack of evidence. Please examine why you got to thinking this way. You have great knowledge, but it will be wasted if you don't use wisdom. Your faith in God's Word must remain solid! I will certainly be praying that you be given wisdom in this matter. It might be the one thing you need to be snatched out of the fire!
As regards the increase in demonic activity during Christ's ministry, the explanation is in Rev 12:3,4 (one of the few moments Revelation refers to an event of the past).
It helps to know that all throughout history, when there is a spirit anointed servant of God shining "light", the demons present themselves in large numbers to oppose God’s anointed one, often creating "side shows" to distract others from listening attentively to the truth and putting faith in the message. The more important the messenger and message is, the greater the opposition or sideshow. What happened when Moses and Aaron presented themselves before Pharoah? Sideshow Jannes and Jambres are given special powers by Satan in an attempt to discredit God's anointed ones, distract others and prevent others from putting faith in their important message. When the last two prophets arrive, one like Moses and one like Elijah, Satan will give tremendous powers to the false prophet. Although there are many false prophets, the one described in Rev is two horned, so there will be two principal individuals, false prophets, that Satan will raise up against God's 2 prophets, giving them special powers to distract mankind, just like he did in Pharaoh's day.
Hope that helps a little.
Please take no offense Robert. Instead of ignoring your comment, I have felt the need to take the time and remind you of what the scriptures say about Satan's guilt and put faith in those accounts.

Reply by Robert-6512 on 2017-09-01 22:06:15
Yehorakam,
I would by no means ever discourage anyone from having faith in the Bible. Far from it. So, when you bring up scriptural passages about Eve and Job and Judas, do I dispute these? No. However, these passages are not proof in the objective sense. They are articles of faith. The idea is, if one has faith in the Bible, then by extension we have faith in everything it says, including the parts about Satan and the demons.
However, my question is more along these lines: Set your Bible down, and using only the means available to the average human, (1) PROVE that Satan exists, and (2) PROVE that he actually did any one specific thing or took some action at some time in recorded human history.
You can't. That's the problem. So, if you can't prove such a thing, then claiming that Satan is responsible for any events now in modern times is merely speculation and an article of faith; it is not a fact.
There is a notion from times past, about how people used to argue as to how many angels could dance on the head of a pin. Evidently, the basis of these debates was the presumption that angelic capabilities were so vast that they could do simply anything they wished without limit. The fallacy of such debates boils down to these debaters going beyond what is written. Even if we assume the Bible tells the truth that angels exist, it is extremely vague about their nature and capabilities. For instance, how old is the average angel? What are they made out of? How large are they? How strong are they? Assuming they "fly" in a manner of speaking, how fast are they? Can they "fly" faster than the speed of light? What are their limits? Answer: We don't know.
Can you see what I am getting at? If we cannot answer the simplest questions about angels - or Satan or the demons - what is the point in speculating what they can or cannot do to help or harm us? There is no point. For all intents and purposes, we are totally ignorant. We don't know what we are talking about. We have no business even attempting to speculate or make assertions of any kind, because we have no proof and nothing to go on.
To me, when people go around blaming Satan for everything, it's simply a case of avoiding responsibility for our own actions, and minimizing the failings and sins of mankind. Satan didn't give rise to World War II and Hitler and Stalin and Mussolini - these men made their own choices. Satan didn't invent airplanes with machine guns, or nerve gas or atomic bombs - people made them. Satan didn't create a pseudo-Christian organization that deceptively uses God's name to deceive its followers, to deny Christ and to blasphemously follow men in Brooklyn, who among other things offer cover and protection to child abusers. Men did these things all by themselves.
My feeling is that all Satan can really do is give people ideas. It is people that act on those ideas - or not. That is why you won't find any "proof" that Satan has done any particular thing, because he hasn't. We did it all ourselves, all through the wretched history of the human race from day one until now. We did every damn thing ourselves.Reply by Yehorakam on 2017-09-02 00:34:27
I can understand what you are saying Robert. It is true that Satan puts wicked thoughts in the mind of individuals and they carry it out. But you also have to think: if Satan or the demon in question hadn't put that in their mind, would they have done it? Most cases the answer is no. So who carries the heavier responsibility?
Satan even succeeded in putting an idea in a spirit anointed ones head...Moses killing a man thinking it was time to free Israel, David with the illegal census. He can put things in our heads too. We can be corrupted from the chastity that belongs the Christ. The Witnesses erroneously think Satan cannot read our thoughts, and for example our prayers are private. Wrong. Satan can read our thoughts. Proof? Thoughts are physical, tangible and measureable. They are an electrical impulse that follows a physical path. We think they are "miraculously invisible" to everyone (except God) only for the simple reasons that we do not see our thoughts and we have not fully understood how to read/translate them. A needle on a record player takes a zigzagging etching in the vinyl and translates the movement into different sounds that are not noise but rather a melody. Scientists are now devising ways to map the brain and decifre thoughts related to muscle control, translating what is an electrical impulse on a path into a specific thought. I believe that Satan has no difficulty understanding that if an electrical impulse takes a certain path, it means we are thinking about x and y. I believe he can also create a thought in a person and the person thinks it was their own thoughts. He can put things in our head if we're not careful. The only true protection is the Holy Spirit. I am convinced that without HS, Satan can you have you believe in anything he wants, and he's done that with practically everyone. How about those experiences where someone was praying to God to find the "truth" and right after the Witnesses knock at the door. The accounts are true. So then the question arises for those of us that know "the truth about the truth": If the person was praying to know the truth, would the God of truth have sent the Witnesses to their door...a group that teaches false doctrines? So then, who was it that heard the silent prayer and subsequently sent an "answer" to the prayer? Who was it that put the thought in the Witnesses head to do "just one more door" or knock a third time? Think about that and all the other prayers that are miraculously answered through false religions. Satan hears, he answers by means of a false religion, and hook line and sinker the person now believes 100% that God must be with the religion and never strays from it. Just think, even a holy angel of heaven became a deceptive spirit in the mouths of false prophets. What did that involve? The angel didn't literally speak out of the mouth of the false prophets. He placed erroneous thoughts in the mind of false prophets so those thoughts would produce false teachings and nothing they said would come true (1 Ki 22:19-23). Demons exercised thought control over a heard of swine. The angels exercised thought control over multitudes of snakes so as to bring them to the camp of the Israelite and bite them. Men were inspired to write things that were not their thoughts. How did that happen? With God or Christ's permission, a holy angel put the thought in the writers head. And perhaps here I am letting the cat out of the bag...the Holy Spirit is not some impersonal force of God. The catholics got it wrong because they believe it is just ONE person (and God himself). The Witnesses got it wrong because they think it is some mysterious, unexplainable "force." The Holy Spirit is a general and anonymous reference to any one of God’s holy angels that he is using for a task, such as to support his faithful servants on earth. You can't "grieve" an impersonal force that has no feelings, but you can definitely cause grief to the holy angels with bad conduct (Eph 4:30). The action of the Holy Spirit is in fact the action of any one of the "holy" spirits sent to minister to those that will inherit salvation. Being "inspired" by HS means that God or Christ sent an angel, and that "holy" spirit put a thought in your head (Acts 8:26,29). That's why when Christ referred to the HS spirit that would teach us, he said 'HE will teach you all things, and just as HE HEARS from me, he will relate it to you.' That's not an impersonal force like electricity he was referring to. Being "anointed by spirit" means that an angel has been specifically assigned to help you personally in the purpose that God has for you (Gen 48:15,16; Mat 18:10; Heb 1:14). Sometimes that angel assigned to you will give you protection from death so you can finish your assignment (Dan 3:25,28; 6:22) When you're assignment is done, you no longer have that special protection, so death is imminent because Satan and the demons want to kill the anointed at any opportunity so they cannot share the truth with others. Just as there are "unclean" spirits, there are also "holy" spirits.
You ask me to prove to you or others that Satan exists. I once had a Bible study that defiantly demanded Satan or the demons to appear for him to believe they existed. I told him: 'don't challenge them...put faith in what God says.' He regretted it. They did appear and caused him nothing but problems. He would probably relate to others what they did to him (and they were not using another human, but doing it to him directly), but it was too traumatic. Proving their existence or guiltiness to others cannot be done because my only proof is my faith. I believe that true faith is not about proving something to someone else. It is about proving something to myself. If I have proved something to myself, I am no longer in doubt or speculation. I feel no heavy responsibility to prove to others that Satan is responsible for many evil acts. The scriptures tell me how evil and deceptive he is and how much power he has over individuals and I believe that. If others put faith in what the scriptures say about him, they will also find the proof they need, the proof in fact being their faith in God's Word. Its about trusting what our Father and his son have said about the subject.
For those that do not put faith in God's Word, they may indeed find no proof that Satan has committed a single wicked act. They will attribute all wickedness to humans, and fail to see who is behind it all. And who in particular would that thinking benefit?....
I think it is best to worry little about proving things to others and spend almost all one's time proving something to oneself. In fact, I believe the scriptures are primarily for convincing oneself, not others. You can share with others, but they really should be self-convinced because of their own personal examination and the help of HS. Faith is personal. It is not the faith of others that gives us salvation, but our own faith that we've built. The righteous one will "live" by means of HIS faith.
My only encouragement is that by Bible reading and supplicating the help of the HS, prove to yourself what is the case here.

"The Witnesses erroneously think Satan cannot read our thoughts, and for example our prayers are private. Wrong. Satan can read our thoughts."
Can you provide me scriptures to prove this?
So when I was praying to Jehovah to give me a sign that the Watchtower Organization was His earthly organization and that I should worship Him via this religious group and shortly after I found myself on the JWfacts website, which completely de-bunks the WT religion, how do I know if this was 'God' showing me the truth or 'Satan' showing me a false truth? If Satan can hear our prayers, how can I be sure that the answers I receive are actually from 'God' and not from 'Satan'. Could I have been misled by Satan to research the JWfacts website? What I thought was evidence against the WT religion could in fact be a deception from Satan? My WT friends certainly tell me all the time that apostate websites are from Satan... so Yehorakam, did Satan, after hearing my prayer, mislead me away from the WT religion via the JWFACTS website, or did God show me the truth about the religion via the Jwfacts website?Reply by Yehorakam on 2017-09-03 14:42:38
Hi Seasons of Grace. I have had the very same dilemma. It can leave you a little unsteady at times. I felt I had prayers answered through the org when I was in it, with the effect that it convinced me it was the truth, and then I've had prayers answered that have shown me to leave that very org. I think either God answered the first prayers, or he answered the latter. I don't think both if the answers have 2 opposite outcomes. So how do I find out? My main recourse has been God's Word and that's why I treasure it so much more than when I was a Witness. When I think God has answered a prayer, or that he has given me understanding, I do a very careful analysis to see if it fits completely with what is written in God's Word, his will and his way of doing things. The apostle John tells us to 'test the spirits.' Case in point. A deceptive spirit has convinced the GB that they are anointed and receiving direction from God. The reality: they teach lies and have very little regard for the one who should be their groom, their true love, Christ. What is more, millions others have been deceived into thinking that they are receiving messages or direction from God. In all of this, they all failed to test to see whether these 'spirit directed' teachings fit completely with God's Word. So if you feel you have had a prayer answered, test the answer to see where it came from. How? With God's Word. It has to fit perfectly with his word. A holy spirit/faithful angel would never do or say something that would contradict God's Word or his son's teachings or mislead you in any way (Gal 1:6-9). There are Biblical examples of those who thought they had been contacted by a holy spirit or were sure God was directing them (Job 4, 1 Kings 13). But the message didn't fit with God’s expressed word.
Another recourse I have is a close friend who I believe to be truly anointed. I bounce things off him. If he feels differently, I pray for the HS to correct me to see it his way, or for him to see it my way...and then wait...sometimes months. The spirit must eventually produce harmony, so before coming to quick conclusions, I wait until we are both of the same mind. Sometimes we both are taught the same thing by the Holy Spirit within weeks or days of each other. Sometimes he prays for an answer and the spirit reveals it to me. Sometimes I pray for an answer and the spirit reveals it to him. That type of relationship is a blessing. But it is not a guarantee, for I suppose we both could be wrong. That is why I am always 'begging for the spirit.' (Mat 5:3)
As regards prayers being answered, millions of prayers are made every day. Some are answered by our Father, and some are answered by an angel of "light." That being the case, it would be the course of wisdom for each person to analyze if a so called answer to a prayer or 'understanding' fits completely with both our Father's way of doing things and his expressed word. Prayers are personal and can be answered, so it is up to each person to come to their own conclusions in this matter. But, it would be a danger to think that our thoughts are private and that Satan cannot give us an answer that only serves to mislead us. Perhaps you have noticed the increase of magicians that are not like the ones of old that pulled a dove out of their sleeve. No, they are magicians that have direct contact with unclean spirits. They are on Americas Got Talent, Las Vegas shows, the Discovery channel, youtube, etc. The demons read a person's thoughts and tell the magician what the person is thinking of. Sometimes it works in reverse. The magician decides on something, writes it down somewhere and afterwards, the person in the audience comes up with the exact same thing. How did what the magician was thinking of get in the person's head? The thought was placed there by an unclean spirit. I do not wish to create curiosity for these types of things. But these real occurences that we know about coupled with what the scriptures say should be enough to show us that the physical thought process is something that spirits with a higher intelligence understand. Just think, Satan and the demons made and used physical bodies for themselves at the time of Noah. And the bodies worked, brains, thought processes and all! Therefore, our thoughts/prayers are not private. Should this make us paranoid? No. Careful what we think about? Yes. But for the main reason of love, not fear. We firstly want to please our Father even in our thoughts. That throws out fear. The peace and protection given to us by our great Father through the HS gives us tremendous peace, especially when we are thinking about and doing the things that are pleasing to him. Our special relationship with him through Christ as sons & daughters allows us to carry on without fear even though our thoughts and actions might be observed. If we are sons and daughters and conduct ourselves as such, we have no reason to worry when we have such a marvelous and powerful Father, his marvelous and powerful only begotten son, and all our powerful 'older brothers', the holy angels that have remained true to our Father and Creator.
In conclusion, I believe that the teaching of the Witnesses that Satan and the demons cannot read thoughts is a teaching that only helps Satan. I think it only gives him an edge if we believe he isn't that intelligent...that he is somehow handicapped in his understanding of the physical thought process. With each passing day, I am a little less 'ignorant of his designs' and happy to pass it on if I can. May we not remain ignorant of his capabilities, thus giving him that edge he wants. And may we rely on God’s word and the HS as our guide and protection
Much love,

Hi Robert-6512,
You said: "Satan didn’t give rise to World War II and Hitler and Stalin and Mussolini – these men made their own choices. The fallacy in this logic comes from your assertion in the belief that we cannot prove the existence of Satan outside of the Bible.
The fact is that we cannot prove the existence of Christ outside of the Bible. You can't have one without the other. Christ spoke of Satan and attributed to him rulership of the world. If we believe in Christ, then we believe in his words. If we deny his words--about Satan for instance--then we deny him.

Jesus acknowledged Satan exist by answering his questions in the desert whilst the wicked one was trying to seduce Jesus to give him one act of worship.
We as Christians are told to put on our armour of faith because our fight is against the bad forces of the air.
Ephesians 6:10-18New International Version (NIV)
The Armor of God
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

Critical thinking requires two points of view to compare and contrast, or in the case of science, independent confirmation of a theory by experimentation for repeatability of findings by other investigators.
So if the Watchtower publishes a "theory" of interpretation, or takes a dogmatic position as "Biblical" by decree, or claims authority as the appointed slave, then critical thinking demands the right to examine the scriptures and the history of the idea presented, or to question the authority of 7 men to decide all issues for 8 million others, without the right to raise an alternate view or explanation.
A glaring example is that if inspection was made by Jesus in 1914, and the Bible Students were selected as the organization to be appointed as a faithful and discrete slave, why were the doctrines of Rutherford, Knorr and Franz so radically different that today one would be ostracized for even reading the old Watchtowers?

I believe I'll make an exception and comment on this when it comes up.
Of course, I'll then read the entire quote and explain to all why we are in fact really protecting ourselves by not allowing outside reading/research despite our writing committee's setting the precedent for it.
That ought to get me a free pass into the little room!
Will keep all posted...
