I agree that "ego eimi" doesn't mean that Jesus is God. Interestingly. the same expression was used by a blind man who was healed by Jesus (John 9:9), and by Jesus himself, in his conversation with the Samaritan woman (John 4:26).
In both instances, "ego eimi" translates as "I am he".
The blind man in John 9:9 was confirming his identity.
In John 4:26 Jesus was also confirming his identity AS A MESSIAH.

So, by saying, "before Abraham was, ego eimi", Jesus said that he was THE (promissed) MESSIAH before Abraham even existed.

1 Peter 1:19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or spot. 20 He was known before the foundation of the world, but was revealed in the last times for your sake.

    Hello Judá Ben-Hur

Thank you for this link and especially to Mr Penton for very insightful work about John 8:58. It is useful to me as linguistic background, because I sometimes encounter this problem in discussions.

God's name is clearly defined in the book of Exodus. If someone tells me that God 's name is "I am", then I ask him if he can count only until to 14. For if he could count to 15, then he would have read Exodus 3:15, where God clearly said to Moses:
"God also said to Moses, "Say this to the people of Israel: Yahweh, the God of your ancestors—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you. This is my eternal name, my name to remember for all generations." (NLT).
