Do Jehovah’s Witnesses accept blood transfusions? No, they don’t according to Governing Body Update #6.
Here’s the exact wording:
With regard to blood, Jehovah's Witnesses have understood Acts 15 to mean they should not consume whole blood, either by mouth or by transfusion, and that they should not donate blood….Medical science has shown the effectiveness of treatments that avoid blood transfusions and associated risks….But what's the main point? Jehovah's Witnesses don't accept of whole blood, nor do we donate whole blood to be transfused to others.
Those are the only times that Jackson uses the word “transfusions” throughout the entire 14-minute update.
Don’t you find that odd? Whenever he refers to accepting blood components, he never uses the word transfusion. Why not? How do you think they get blood components into the body of a patient? By transfusing them, but Jackson goes out of his way not to use the word transfusion when referring to blood components. What’s his game?
The Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses has found itself between a rock and a hard place. The rock pressing down on them is the growing number of governments that are examining the Watchtower organization for what they view as violations of human rights. Russia has already banned them and seized their properties because they view them as an extremist religion that denies basic human rights. What irony that is, coming from a country like Russia. Norway also tried to remove their religious status for the same reason. And then there’s Japan which is currently threatening to deregister the Organization on similar grounds. That’s the rock.
The hard place is the effect a change to the blood policy will have on the millions of Witnesses worldwide who considered this a law of God, not just a ruling of men—because that is how the Governing Body has always sold their position on blood transfusion. The Bible doesn’t just say “Don’t drink or eat blood.” It says “Abstain from blood.” The Governing Body has interpreted that injunction to include blood transfusions.
So, the Governing Body cannot just drop the prohibition on blood transfusions, because they’ve told everyone for years that it is God’s law. They don’t want to lose their funding. On the other hand, they have to drop that prohibition if they are going to appease the governments and not lose the religious status and their extensive real estate holdings. Rock—hard place.
So they have to make it appear that they are not losing the prohibition against blood transfusions to one group—their flock—while showing clearly that they have dropped it to the other group—the governments of the world.
This requires a level of duplicity worthy of the devil’s own. They are true to their master, without a doubt.
They want the rank and file to believe they are standing their ground like Peter and the other apostles.
“In answer Peter and the other apostles said: “We must obey God as ruler rather than men.” (Acts 5:29)
But the evidence we’ll show you makes them seem more like the ancient Jewish Governing Body that persecuted Jesus’ followers.
“Consequently the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the Sanhedrin together and began to say: “What are we to do, because this man performs many signs? If we let him alone this way, they will all put faith in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”” (John 11:47, 48)
Those men were going to murder Jesus Christ to keep their position and their nation, but in so doing, they ensured they would lose not only their position, and their nation, but their own lives as well.
The duplicity hidden in the careful wording of this update is exposed once you realize, as I recently did, that the reason Jackson only uses the word transfusion three times is that he doesn’t want to reveal the fact that virtually all blood transfusions nowadays are of blood components.
Only 1% to 2% of all blood transfusions are of whole blood. When a doctor orders a blood transfusion, 98% of the time he’s talking about blood components. But they are still called blood transfusions.
Geoffrey intentionally doesn’t use that word when speaking of blood components because of the hard place—because of the effect it would have on his JW flock. He has to make it seem like the Governing Body will never back down from their stand on blood transfusions.
So, he refers to the use of—not the transfusion of—blood components like red cells, white cells, plasma, and platelets.
Effectively, the Governing Body can now tell the Governments of the world that they allow blood transfusions, because they treat 98% of all blood transfusions as a matter of personal conscience.
But there is still that nasty 2%. Say someone is in a car accident and needs blood urgently and only whole blood is available, possibly from a live donor? How do they get around that without appearing to the rank and file that they are compromising the unchanging stand that blood transfusions are prohibited by God? If they treat a situation like that as a judicial case requiring the transfusion of whole blood, they would appear to the governments as being deceptive, which would hurt their case.
So to protect themselves from such an eventuality we have a new directive in the form of a letter directed only to congregation elders. This is from a September 18, 2026 letter to the bodies of elders.
3. Assisting Those Who Misuse Blood: If the elders learn that a Christian has consumed unbled meat or blood, or accepted a transfusion of whole blood of another person (alloge-neic), two elders should meet with him to provide loving shepherding and to establish the facts…. Depending on the circumstances, the individual may not be exemplary for a period of time. In the rare instance he does not respond to the assistance of the elders or if you have any questions about a particular situation, please contact the Service Department. This paragraph replaces the direction found in Shepherd, chapter 7, paragraph 35. Shepherd will be adjusted in the next revision to reflect this update.
No longer can the elders take action themselves. Now they must contact the branch. But the rank and file will be ignorant of this change. To them, it will appear that the organization has not changed its position that blood transfusions are a sin, but in practice, they are now positioned to avoid any bad PR caused by disfellowshipping anyone who has taken or donated blood.
Can you see how unfair this is to the true believers, those who believe the direction of God comes through the Governing Body. Whatever they say publicly about blood transfusions being prohibited and a sin against God, those are just words—words that are not backed up by actions. In effect, transfusions of whole blood are also being treated as a matter of conscience, but they are not letting the average Witness know that.
So, a young Witness who is a victim in, say, a motorcycle accident and who is bleeding out at the scene who could be saved by a whole blood donation from a donor, also at the scene, might decide to refuse it because he thinks he has no choice. He must obey God. He doesn’t know that the Organization is now surreptitiously treating even whole blood transfusions as a conscience matter. They have decided to act this way, because of the rock bearing down on them—the governments. So, they hide the fact that even whole blood transfusions will no longer end in disassociation/disfellowshipping.
Whenever a person starts with a lie, they face a conundrum when eventually that lie is exposed. Do they admit they lied and repent, or do they try to defend the lie by building an increasingly elaborate framework of lies? The Governing Body has consistently chosen option number 2. The problem with that framework of lies is that it is very fragile and becomes increasingly untenable.

Likewise, each Christian must decide whether to donate components or fractions derived from his own blood.
Just how is that supposed to work? When they hook you up at the clinic, what comes out is whole blood, not distinct blood components. What this appears to mean is that you cannot donate blood when you know for sure that it will be used as whole blood. So, here’s the scenario of our motorcycle victim again, but this time it’s a Jehovah’s Witness who is the potential blood donor at the scene.
He believes donating blood is a sin—even though the Bible makes no mention of this whatsoever—so he says to the poor fellow lying there, bleeding out: “I’m sorry, really, really sorry about this, but Jehovah God prohibits me from donating whole blood. If you needed only components, I’d be fine with that, but giving you whole blood is a sin, so I’m just going to sit here and watch you die. I do hope you understand. But I’ll pray for you, okay?”
And here’s one last thing to show the duplicity of their reasoning: Earlier this year, in Governing Body Update #2, they made it a matter of conscience to store one’s own blood to be used later in a transfusion during a surgical procedure, for instance. So, let me get this right, Jehovah says it’s a sin to donate or receive a whole blood transfusion—unless it’s your own blood. Then it’s okay, right?
To my former brothers and sisters, I say that it’s high time to wake up and smell the coffee!
I appeal to you to leave while there is still time. You may resist because you think, “But where else will I go.”
Listen, you don’t stand in a building that has just caught fire and say, “I can’t leave the building because I don’t know where to go next.”
And don’t go running from one burning building just to enter another. We are not called by God to belong to any organization, religion or church. Witnesses have been taught to think about “where.” Where will I go? I can’t leave the organization. Where else will I go? Where, where, where?
You don’t believe me. Here, run this test on your Witness friends and family. Read this verse to them: “So Jesus said to the Twelve: “You do not want to go also, do you?”” (John 6:67 NWT)
Then ask them to tell you what Peter said in reply. They’ll say that Peter answered: “Where else would we go?” I’ve yet to have a Jehovah’s Witness answer this correctly, and I’ve asked it a number of times. Here’s the right answer:
“Simon Peter answered him: “Lord, whom shall we go away to? You have sayings of everlasting life.” (John 6:68)
Not “where will we go” but “to whom will we go.” Jesus Christ is our leader, not any man or group of men. Run to him and away from men.
Brothers, sisters, this change in the blood policy of the Organization should be a major wakeup call. Leave while there is still time. Take a leap of faith. Our Father in heaven will catch you, but first you have to jump.
